LiftUp was a large-scale temporary installation that kicked off the Open Dialog Box curated exhibition on Buitenkant Street opposite the Kimberley Hotel on Roeland Street in Cape Town. My contribution to the programme called for the temporary gallery space – a rented shipping container – to be turned on its head. On 17 September 2016, two blocks from Parliament, two mobile cranes lifted the container and kept it stable in 40km/h winds between 6 and 8 pm. I invited the audience to join me and writer Sinazo Chiya underneath the hanging container to watch footage I shot of me privately at work, painting in my studio.
